Parrot Island Treasure Chest Foraging Toy: Small Hanging 2 Drawer Horizontal with Clear Acrylic. Dimensions(Closed): 3 3/8"Hx6 1/4"Wx3"D.
One of the things we all know we need to do is keep our companion parrots happy. One part of this responsibility is keeping them busy and their intelligent brains stimulated. Many of us who have worked long-term with companion birds have come to the realization that we may be handing them too much too easily - they have an unending supply of food available right in front of them, their toys hang there ready to be destroyed and their owners are many times too willing to spend extensive time simply cuddling their bird without really teaching or challenging that intelligence. This is most likely how much of the boredom or over-dependence on the owner to occupy the birds time may occur. In the wild - virtually nothing is handed easily to these animals. They work for food (forage) much of the day and even their play and interaction involves problem solving and thought. So we decided (and were cheered on by Sally Blanchard of the Companion Parrot Quarterly, and Dr. Tammy Jenkins of St. Francis Animal & Bird Hospital) to find ways to challenge that incredible mind - before they challenge us more than we may want!
The drawers move both forward and backward, yet cannot be fully removed by the bird. The owner can completely disassemble our Foraging Treasure Chest toys easily for thorough cleaning.
We Recommend the Small 2 Drawer Treasure Chests for small to mid-sized birds: Cockatiels, Conures, Pionus, Caiques, Amazons, Greys and similaly sized birds. NOTE: Not recommended for Cockatoos and Macaws.
Please Note: When hanging your Treasure Box in the cage - slide the drawers to the forward (open position) before you mount it to prevent the drawers from binding between the back of the Treasure Box and the cage. This can happen if the lip on the back of the drawer (part of what stops it from being able to slide out the front of the box) is overhanging the back of the Treasure Box when it is first hung in the cage.
We also offer Treasure Chest Starter/Refill Kits of toy parts that contain a great variety of toy parts that have been hand-picked by us to suit the many different varieties of companion birds - a great way to outfit your Treasure Chest! Just click on the above link in blue to view these kits.
As with all toys these should be supervised until you see how your bird reacts and plays with it. We have extensively tested these toys with our birds and many others - but to quote Sally Blanchard: "There is no 100% safe toy for parrots".
